"DOGarmo" Park

Ok, corny play on the "Degarmo" Park name. But I do think it's pretty cool that there is a nice little doggy park in Chico now where our furry four-legged friends (and their people) can congregate to run, play and socialize. A collaborative effort between the City of Chico and CARD (Chico Area Recreation District), the recently-completed Degarmo Park is located on Leora Ct., off the Esplanade, just north of Eaton Rd. (Click here for a map.)

I tagged along with son Gabe, the lovely Eva, and their newest family member Jasper recently, and it was a blast! Watching the dogs racing around on the lawn, meeting/greeting new and old friends in that funny, sniffing doggy way (remember, talking about the DOGS here). We even ran into Aggy and her "intendo" Brandon there with their cute, speedy little girl Harlow. The dog park is fully fenced (with a two-gated entry for defense against Houdini-type pets) and has drinking fountains for the dogs and their humans. If you have a friendly mutt, check it out!

Kids & Kitchen!

Kids & Kitchen! I visited this fun new Chico shop the other day and found lots of great kitchen gadgets as well as unique gift items. Artfully displayed tea towels, ceramics, oils and more nearly jump off the shelves, screaming to go home with you. Best of all, 100% of the money generated at Kids & Kitchen benefits programs for those with developmental disabilities like autism, cerebral palsy and Down's Syndrome.

This shop is an offshoot of The Little Red Hen Nursery (corner of 8th & Wall Street downtown Chico; click here for a short video tour), the 1997 brainchild of indefatigable Executive Director Teresa Wolk Hayes, whose son had been diagnosed with autism (read the story of its inception here)

What a Buyer Wants

What are today's home buyers looking for? According to a survey* of 22,000 recent home buyers, they plan to be “more practical” in their next purchase, focusing on livable space rather than "unnecessary upgrades." Extras such as pools, media rooms and even dining rooms are considered unnecessary luxuries, with the focus being more on such things as:

Efficient use of space (e.g. cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling)
More workable kitchens (islands are still quite popular)
"Greener" features (insulation, high-efficiency appliances)
Nearby walking paths and playgrounds

In the master bath, whirlpool tubs are giving way to soaker tubs. But both are secondary to oversized showers.

Some features that are still important to buyers, however, include a home office, minimum two-car garage, and master suite on the ground floor (if it's a two-story home).

Of course, I think most buyers these days (40% of whom are first-timers) are also looking for a good deal. With interest rates and prices at historic lows, and with a small window of opportunity to cash in on the tax credits now available, what better time to be a buyer? Curry in a Hurry?

Ok, so I'm driving back to Chico yesterday (after attending an all-day advanced course in beautiful downtown Stockton on short sales and foreclosures--it's a sign of the times), intentionally timing my trip so that the hunger pangs would start right about Yuba City, home of one of my favorite eateries, "Taste of India." Imagine my surprise when I rolled into the parking lot (where it's nestled in a strip mall next to the The Dollar Store) only to enter a Twilight-Zone-Meets-Highlights-What's-Wrong-With-This-Picture scene. The sign on the door still read "Taste of India," but below it was a new little tag line, "Curry in a Hurry!" Below THAT was a cartoon figure of a Texas Longhorn (or what I'm guessing is a Longhorn anyway) emblazoned on a "Big JOHN'S Grill" sign! Huh. I would never have thought of combining those two cuisines.

Now, I guess Yuba City may not have caught on to the "Slow Food" movement yet (or maybe the proprietor just couldn't think of another catchy word to rhyme with "curry"). I used to love stopping in at the quaint little place and taking my time enjoying their Vegetarian Feast to the strains of sitar music emanating from the TV where videos of silkily-clad East Indian beauties cavorted. No more. Now I was feeling rushed before I even entered the premises. Curry in a Hurry! Perhaps not surprisingly, the dining section was entirely bereft of customers. All of the patrons were sitting in the new "saloon" section of Big John's Grill, while some sport or other blared away on the TV. I ordered cafeteria style, hurriedly consumed my meal (still tasty) and beat a hasty (ha! rhymes with tasty!) retreat. Next time I think I'll just do take out...only 45 minutes to Chico.

Once again, our little town of Chico is in a nationwide "Top 10" list of best places to live! This time it's the April 2010 issue of Men's Journal. I haven't seen the actual magazine yet (hopefully it's not sold out here in Chico), but I did catch the local Chico E-R newspaper article. According to staff writer Laura Urseny, "How the university provides a plus to the community was mentioned, as well as the cultural and arts amenities that Chico provides."

CASH FOR CAULKERS

Heard of the new "CASH FOR CAULKERS" program the Obama administration is proposing? Also known as The Home Star Program, if approved by Congress it will offer rebates of $1,000 to $1,500, or 50% of the cost, for simple upgrades, such as windows and insulation, duct sealing, and energy-efficient water heaters, for a maximum of $3,000 per home.

Job creation could be a big selling point with Congress. It's been estimated the program could create 168,000 jobs in construction and related industries. (Andersen Windows refilled 600 positions because of increased demand last year driven by a $1,500 energy tax credit, says Jim Humphrey, CEO of Andersen, which currently employs 10,000 people.)

The concept is based on the popular "Cash for Clunkers" program, which helped spur auto sales last year. While we're awaiting word on congressional approval, you might want to check out sites like Flex Your Power or EnergySavvy.com for current rebates available. This may be the year to get some of those home upgrades done for greater energy efficiency. As President Obama says, "Insulation is sexy!"

Invisible People (A Blogger Helps the Homeless)

Heard this NPR story (on my beloved local KCHO station) this morning about formerly-homeless Mark Horvath, a blogger who is helping the homeless by recording their stories on video (known as a "vlog") on his site Invisible People.tv.

Take a listen:

In 2009 Mark traveled across the country, handing out clean socks and interviewing the homeless as well as community leaders regarding the plight of the homeless during these challenging times. This week he traveled to Anchorage, Alaska, to capture the stories of the homeless there. By raising awareness through modern technology (blog, vlog, twitter etc.), he's generating funds to assist those in need. Pretty remarkable guy.

Here in Chico you can help by donating (time, food, clothing or money) to The Jesus Center, Catalyst Domestic Violence Services, the Torres Shelter, or the Salvation Army. Even something as simple as cleaning out your closet and donating unused items can help.

Running From Camera

Eva (daughter-in-law extraordinaire) found this blog Running From Camera while she was helping me update the "look" of my blog, and we both thought it was pretty interesting. The blogger says, "The rules are simple: I put the self-timer on 2 seconds, push the button and try to get as far from the camera as I can." For some reason, this reminds me of a man I heard of (a friend of a friend...true story) who would go home every night and hit the "1" key on his adding machine until bedtime...apparently just to see how far he could get each night. Went through several calculators...and wives! Just goes to show you there is no limit to what the human mind can conjure up to do with the hours allotted.

Starry Starry Night in Bidwell Park

What could possibly be more romantic than a full moon stroll in Chico's Upper Bidwell Park on a summer's eve? Maybe a "starry starry" journey on a clear, cold, moonless night to the Chico Community Observatory!

Built in 2001* the Observatory currently has two 14" Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes which have their own "go to" computer systems, allowing volunteers to "order up" various celestial bodies. From the Shoemaker Open-Sky Planetarium** one can enjoy Jupiter and its Galilean moons, sparkling star clusters, far-out galaxies, and the ever-popular Great Orion nebula. The last time I visited the Observatory I was amazed to see Saturn's rings so clearly--what an astronomical treat! The volunteers are unfailingly helpful and enthusiastic (including long-time stargazer and docent Anita Berkow); kudos to them for keeping this Chico treasure available for our viewing pleasure.

Open Thursday through Sunday from 6 - 9 p.m. (on clear nights only), the Observatory is located near Horseshoe Lake. The web site features a weather forecast box which is updated hourly. Be sure to dress warmly during fall/winter/spring visits!

* With donations by: Greater Chico Kiwanis, Slater & Sons Construction, Eagle Security, the Geosciences department from California State University at Chico, the Chico Unified School District, North Valley Astronomers, Sacramento Valley Astronomical Society, and the Greater Chico Chamber of Commerce.

** The brainchild of local astonomy educator Kris Koenig, director of the Observatory. The "Open-Sky Planetarium" was named for famed comet hunter (and CSUC grad) Carolyn Spellman Shoemaker, a research scientist at Lowell Observatory and wife of the late great planetary scientist Eugene Shoemaker, tragically killed in a car accident in 1997 on the Tanami Road northwest of Alice Springs, Australia while searching for previously undiscovered meteor craters. On July 31, 1999, some of his cremains were carried to the moon by the Lunar Prospector space probe. To date, he is the only person to have the distinction of being interred on the moon. The memorial capsule (designed by American planetary scientist Carolyn Porco) is inscribed with images of Comet Hale-Bopp, the Barringer Crater, and a quotation from Romeo and Juliet:

"And, when he shall die Take him and cut him out in little stars And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun."

Talk about a romantic tragedy...

Gateway Science Museum Opening!

Haunting of Bidwell Mansion*

It's surprising how many people have lived in Chico for years (or their entire lives) without taking the tour of Bidwell Mansion. On a recent flight from San Francisco to Chico, my mom befriended a young woman from China. It was Song Shuai's first visit to our fair city, so we decided to give her the "Chico Tour." Now, a proper Chico tour must include Bidwell Mansion, the magnificent, romantic 10,000 s.f., three-story Italianate style home built by Chico founder John Bidwell in 1868 at a cost of $56,600.

Some of the more interesting artifacts in the mansion are the framed "hair wreaths" displayed in the parlor. "Hairwork" was a popular craft during the Victorian era, using human hair (usually from family members) to create jewelry and other objects. Wreaths were often made as memorials to deceased relatives (known as "Mourning Wreaths") and were usually mounted on silk and framed behind glass in shadow boxes. (We have a brooch in our family supposedly made from the hair of my great-great grandmother. When I first saw it, I was surprised to see it was nearly an exact match of my hair color!)

If you've never taken the tour (or even if you have), I highly recommend it. It takes less than an hour and only costs a few bucks. The Visitor Center also has actual letters, photos and journals on display. I've taken the tour at least six times and learn new things about the Bidwells and Chico every time I go.

Trivia note: Some of the interior scenes from The Thin Man were shot inside the mansion.

Piano Fun in Hawaii

Imagine my delight when I found out my long-time Chico friends, Pam and Robert Laughlin, would be holding one of their PianoFun workshops in Waikiki during the time my mom and I would be there! They had just completed workshops in Mexico (click here to read a fun blog about that), and this trip was taking them to Kona, Hilo, Honolulu and Kaneohe.

We had the pleasure of joining Pam and Robert to listen in ona gig they were invited to play with a local Gypsy jazz band at a little place called Cafe Che Pasta on Bishop St. in Honolulu. The food was wonderful, the service excellent, and the music was even better. (That's Pam on clairnet in the photo--a stellar performance!) Afterward we were treated to a personal tour of some nearby historical buildings by a local attorney friend of Pam and Robert's, Michael Wong. His family goes back many generations in the islands, and he shared some really interesting history.

My mom took Robert's one-day piano workshop and thoroughly enjoyed it. She's been practicing every day since. Here is the schedule of upcoming classes, if you're interested (or know of someone who may be). Or perhaps you'd like to plan your next vacation to coincide with a PianoFun workshop!

I ♥ Chico! (and photos of Chico)

Just discovered another Facebook photo site, Chico Illustrated, featuring "over a decade of photos capturing the colorful charm and tranquility that each season brings to this lovely town and beautiful Bidwell Park." I never tire of seeing photos of our beautiful Northern California Shangri-La. (Bidwell Mansion photo above by Aimee Proel, originator of Chico Illustrated.)

Bidwell Park Arts is another Facebook site with great local photos. Says photographer John Peters, "I wanted to give the nature of Bidwell Park its own voice through this 3 yr, 15,000 shot photographic study. To celebrate its wonders and hopefully inspire a renewed thoughtfulness in regards to it's future stewardship." Check out the "VodPod" video of some of John's wonderful photography as well. Lou Mars: Drummer or Bionic Man?

I keep feeling compelled to check the livestream of local Chico drummer Lou Mars to watch his progress in his attempt to beat the Guinness World Record for marathan drumming. He's amazing! According to the web site, as I write he's on Day 5, Hour 104 in his effort to break the current record of 120 hours. It's all to raise awareness of the importance of keeping music in our schools.

The exercise in endurance began at 7:30 a.m., Jan. 14th, at NorCal Strength & Conditioning training warehouse. Throughout the ordeal folks have been supporting Lou, both in person (dancing encouraged!) as well as online viewers posting comments on Facebook and on the livestream.

Ok, gotta run; I hear Lou rockin' out to the BeeGees "Stayin' Alive." (How appropriate!)

Update 1/18/10: Lou completed 109 hours of straight drumming--not long enough to beat the 120 hour record. Kudos to him, though, for raising awareness of the plight of the arts in our public schools!

Home Buyer's Tax Credit

The Extended Home Buyers Tax Credit offers current homeowners and first-time home buyers alike an incredible tax-saving opportunity when they buy a home through April 30, 2010 (and close on the home by June 30, 2010). First time buyers, who haven't owned a primary residence in the past three years, are eligible for a tax credit of 10 percent of a home's purchase price, up to a maximum of $8,000.

Current homeowners, who are vacating a principle residence that they have lived in for 5 consecutive years of the past 8 are eligible for a tax credit of 10% of a home's purchase price, up to maximum of $6,500.

The following conditions apply:

The tax credit is only awarded on homes purchased for $800,000, or less
Full tax credit is available to buyers earning up to $125,000 a year, or $225,000 for married couples filing jointly
Partial tax credit is available to buyers earning between $125,000 to $145,000, or for married couples earning between $225,000 to $245,000.

The tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the buyers tax liability, and does not have to be paid back as long as the buyer remains in their home for three years or more. (See "Secrets of the Home Buyer Tax Credit" for more info.) This is a once-in-a-lifetime offer to have Uncle Sam help you buy a house. Don't let this opportunity pass you by!

Fun at Farmer's Market

How lucky are we in Chico to have our fabulous YEAR-ROUND Farmer's Market?!

I love strolling down the aisles, chatting with friends and asking vendors for ideas about how to cook a particular kind of squash or greens. Long-time friend Sarah Adams (or one of her equally beautiful sisters, Molly and Emily) is always there with a smile and sample of her Chico Chai (the BEST! A perfect blend of sweetness and spiciness--I heat mine up with vanilla Almond Milk). I used to babysit those wonderful girls in my previous life as a canyon mama. It's fun to see them "all growed up" and enjoying life.

With movements like "Think Local, Chico" and "10% Shift" gaining momentum, it's obvious that people are becoming more aware of the importance (both for our local economy AND for the planet) of making more of their purchases closer to home. So get your fresh fruits & veggies (maybe pick up a new Chico Bag to haul them in) this Saturday morning, then reward yourself with a nice, steamy cuppa chai or coffee, either there or at one of our great locally-owned coffee shops or eateries!

The Saturday Market is located in the parking lot at Second St. and Wall, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine. (Thursday Market runs April - September in downtown Chico, and Wed. Market runs June - Oct. at the North Valley Plaza Mall, Corner of East Ave. & Pillsbury, near Tinseltown movie theater.)

Do the Closet Purge!

I'm hearing a lot of "decluttering" and "simplifying" themes from my friends in discussions of New Year's resolutions for the new decade. Finally did the "Closet Purge" myself recently: 1) Take every item OUT of the closet; 2) ONLY put back what a) fits, b) feels good, c) you think you'll actually wear; 3) Donate the rest; 4) Hang the "keep" items BACKWARDS (facing the opposite direction you normally hang them). Grand Finale: Any items still hanging backwards at the end of the year (meaning you haven't worn them) get donated.

You may even find some long-forgotten things stuffed in the back of your closet that have come back in style (or be a trendsetter, and bring the style BACK yourself!). Maybe even save some $$ this year, and reduce your clothing shopping. Happy purging!

Polar Bear Swim 2010!

HERE IT IS, the long-awaited 2010 ChicoLaura VIDEO of the 2010 Chico Polar Bear Swim! The bone-chilling fun began at 1:00 p.m. at One Mile in Chico's Bidwell Park. (yes, I was JUST a spectator; well someone had to record the event!). The Chico E-R reported the water temp at 40 degrees (the air felt MUCH warmer this year!) and that over 500 people took the icy plunge.

Speaking of last year, here's a link to my YouTube video of the 2009 swim. Local news crew from KNVN filmed this segment at the event.

I was out of town for the annual "Tree Lighting" ceremony in the downtown plaza, but thanks to this site I was able to watch a two-minute video of the event. Billed as "Chico's Premier Entertainment and Information Site," it provides info on local music, art, sports, nightlife, and special events. There are even blogs by some of our local characters to read. Pretty flashy photos and graphics too! Here's an interesting Sierra Nevada video they did of a tour of Sierra Nevada, complete with an interview with a rare interview with owner Ken Grossman. Virtual Staging

Maybe 15 years ago, I attended a workshop by "Staging Guru" Barb Swartz, who coined the term "staging" and has been teaching Realtors how to enhance their listings since 1972. I wonder what Barb thinks about the new trend of "virtual staging"? Literally "photoshopping" furnishings into a vacant room is certainly less costly than actually hiring a staging professional. With more and more (estimated 85%) folks beginning their home search online, it is one option.

I wonder, however, how a buyer feels when walking into a vacant house after seeing those enticing "picture perfect" views online? Even with full online disclosure ("This is how the home could look"), I can't help but feel it would be a bit of a letdown. Many of my clients have had professional staging done over the years, and I feel the investment (usually less than $2,000 here in Chico) usually helps to sell (especially a vacant home) more quickly and at a higher price.

Honey I Shrunk Our Property Tax Bill!

If you purchased your home within the past several years, it may behoove (don't you love that underused word?) you to check on your assessed value, as it's quite possible you are paying more in property taxes than you should, based on today's lower values.

I recently came across this well-written online article, "How to Get Your Property Taxes Reduced," and thought I'd share it with my dear blog readers. It may take a little leg- and homework, but hey, if it saves you $$ in the long run, it may be time well spent.

Thrill the World - Chico

Can't believe I missed this Chico "Happening," (which was really a worldwide happening), but I was out of town that weekend. Check out this link to "Thrill The World - Chico," which took place in our downtown plaza on 10/24/09. Sponsored by Friends of the Arts, the event was part of a worldwide attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Simultaneous Dance. Thousands of people in cities around the world performed the late, great Michael Jackson's "Thriller zombie" dance, ushering in the Halloween holiday (which has always been big in Chico).

According to ThrillTheWorld.com, 22,923 people danced in 32 countries, breaking the world record. If you've always wanted to learn the "Thriller" dance, here's the tutorial. Chico Gets in the Halloween Spirit!

Chico is ready for Halloween! I have fond memories of strolling around downtown Chico with my boys, checking out all of the crazy costumes (and wearing a few ourselves!). The CSUC students really went all out. Then a few years ago it got a little TOO crazy. These days the downtown stores welcome young "trick-or-treaters" during the afternoon, making it fun and safe. And other folks around town are in the spirit too; check out the photos below!

Mosaic Tile Class - Cooie Grey-Lavin

What did you do last summer? One of the more interesting things I did was take a mosaic tile class taught by the wonderful local mosaicist Cooie Grey-Lavin. Six friends and I had practically unlimited access to her very cool studio (behind her home) during the several-week period to come in and work on our pieces. I worked on the wooden plate pictured (that's son Kiel's photo, or pieces of a photo anyway, glued to the bottom of glass tiles) as well as stepping stones. Others made mirror frames, plaques and even "memorial" stones for beloved pets. Click here to see photos on Flickr of the various projects made in class as well as a few of the studio. Butternut Squash Soup Recipe

Because I love my friend Jenny's butternut squash soup SO much (almost as much as I love Jenny!) and because she was nice enough to share it with our "BOB" book club), I thought I'd "pay it forward" and share it with y'all! If you've never attempted squash soup from scratch, give it a try. All types of squash are currently available at our Chico Farmer's Market, S&S Produce, Chico Natural Foods etc. If you have a crockpot (aka "slow cooker"), you might try my trick of sticking the whole squash in it on "low" for 4 - 6 hours (depending on size of squash) with a tablespoon of water. Much easier to scoop & peel!

Squash Soup (bright, delicious & nutritious!)

SAUTE in a pot until golden: 2 Tblsp each sesame oil, olive oil and fresh ginger (peeled & grated)
2 Cups minced onion
ADD:
8 Cups butternut squash, peeled, seeded & cubed*
4 Cups water
BRING to boil and add 2 Tblsp powdered vegetable broth
SIMMER 20 min. or til squash is soft. Cool 10 min., then puree in blender til smooth.
STIR in 2 1/2 Tblsp fresh lemon juice, 1 tsp each ground coriander & nutmeg, 1/2 tsp each ground cinnamon & powdered cumin.
GARNISH with cilantro leaves (optional: sour cream or plain yogurt) and serve!

*OR cook the squash whole in a crockpot with 1 Tblsp water for 4-6 hours or until easily pierced with a fork, let cool, then peel and scoop seeds. Saute other ingredients and blend all.

California Rocks the Harris Poll!

For the sixth year in a row, California tops the list of states that Americans would choose to live in if they did not live in the states where they currently reside, according to the 2009 Harris Poll. Florida, which was the most popular state in 2001, retains second place on the list. Following California and Florida are Hawaii (#3), Texas (#4), and Colorado (#5). Three states tied for 6th place: Arizona, North Carolina and Washington state.

New York City tops the list of cities that people would most like to live in or near, followed by Denver and San Francisco.

I guess I'm a little surprised by Denver placing second for most desirable city (even before S.F.). I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has visited or lived there as to its attributes. Feel free to comment below!

Hurry, hurry, hurry! The $8,000 First-Time Buyer Tax Credit is about to expire! (November 30, unless it is extended, which is currently being discussed in Congress.) There hasn't been a better time in recent history to be a first-time home buyer. Prices and interest rates are unbelievably low, and this tax credit is a rare and wonderful opportunity.

Memory Walk 2009

What an amazingly gorgeous morning it was in Bidwell Park...perfect for the 2009 Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk. My friend Karen Sinell and I were asked to record the event, and we were happy to oblige. A complete album of my photos are posted on Flickr (click here to view them). This worthwhile event continues to grow each year. Once again, the remarkable duo, Holly Taylor and her husband Eric Peter entertained the crowd during registration (along with their ever-popular basset hound, Cooper), and a bagpiper helped launch the walk.

In spite of the grief this devastating illness causes daily, everyone seemed glad to be there, sharing hugs and supporting the effort to find a cure. To find out more about our local Alzheimer's Association, click here.

Laura's "Art" Debut at Bird in Hand!

Next time you're in downtown Chico, swing by Bird in Hand at 320 Broadway (great toy/gift store!) and check out the newly-installed window display! As a participant in this year's "Artoberfest" window art project, I have the pleasure of displaying a video I made last year entitled "Kahlas Visits Bird in Hand." (Click here to view the original "talkie" version of the video; it's adorable!) Kahlas was one of the students at Rose Scott Learning Community where I volunteered last year, and he was such an inspiration to me. During a little outing I took with him to buy yo-yo string, I shot some Flip Video footage just for the fun of having Kahlas watch it later with his classmates (little knowing it would later evolve into a "visual art piece"!). I'm very proud to share this video and to be part of this year's ultimate art "happening" in Chico, where art is being displayed in storefront windows throughout the downtown area during the month of October. Mozart Mile

Here's a great way to enjoy music and a stroll in the park this weekend AND make much-needed donations to our North State Symphony and the Butte Humane Society! BHS is partnering with NSS in the much-anticipated MOZART MILE this Sunday, October 4th. The fun starts at 8:30 a.m. at One Mile in Bidwell Park. Walk, run, stroll, saunter or stride with your dog, friends or family along a level course on a beautiful autumn morning. Musicians from the North State Symphony and local youth music groups will entertain you along the way. Advance tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for children (16 and under). Jesus Center - SI/Chico Field Trip

About 30 members of our local Soroptimist International of Chico club had the privilege of touring the Jesus Center facilities recently (1297 Park Ave., Chico, CA). What an impressive and dedicated group of people! According to Executive Director Bill Such (who is a dynamic and entertaining public speaker, by the way), over 93,000 meals were served to those in need in 2008. Dedicated to feeding (and now housing and clothing) Chico's hungry and homeless, The Jesus Center opened its doors in the early 1980s. Through the commitment of its staff and many, many volunteers (including members of our S/I Chico club along with other community service organizations), the Center expanded to include the shelter, Sabbath House, in 2002 (which houses an average of 18 women and children a month), and "The Free Store," where folks in need are given credit each month to "shop" for clothing and shoes.

My family and I have joined other S/I Chico members in helping to serve meals over the years, and I have to say, it's a very rewarding experience (and such a simple thing to do; just an hour and a half!). Many of these folks have come on hard times and are so grateful for a hot meal and the friendly, non-judgmental atmosphere provided by the Center.

One time I was serving, and a weary-looking woman came through the food line with her young son (about my son's age at the time, 12 or 13). They had just arrived from somewhere up north and were inquiring about shelter for the night. I have no idea what their story was, but I'll never forget the anxious look on the boy's face as his mom was advised the Center may not be able to accommodate them that night. Talk about heart breaking!

Drakesbad

Ahhhh, Drakesbad. One of my favorite places in the world, and less than two hours' drive from Chico!

One of the few lodgings nestled in Lassen Volcanic Park, Drakesbad Guest Ranch dates back more than 100 years. In fact, Chico founder John Bidwell and his tiny-but-powerful wife Annie used to vacation there to escape the valley heat.

When my sons were young we often stayed in one of the cozy, rustic cabins for a few days (whatever the vacation budget would allow at the time). What a great family retreat! Rowing on Dream Lake, playing board games in the lodge, hiking up to the boiling mud pits, stargazing from the huge hot spring pool, stories by the campfire at night. And the best thing of all (from a mom's viewpoint): three delicious meals a day at the cookhouse--no shopping/cooking/cleaning! Also, no phones/TVs/video games (in fact, the only electricity is provided via generator to the cookhouse; cabins are lit by kerosene lanterns!) Horseback riding is offered too, but we had our own horse at home so never took advantage of that.

When camping at Warner Valley Campground (just 1/2 mile from Drakesbad, 1st come 1st served, one can reserve a meal at the Drakesbad cookhouse, and then have use of the facilities all day. The Amazing Getty Museum

On our trip to So Cal last week, Eva and I made a quick tour of the Getty Museum in L.A. It's been a few years since I was there, but the architecture, grounds and (especially) artwork thrilled me again. Click here to view a few of the photos I took. The Getty sits atop a hill. Entrance to the museum is free, but there is a $15 parking fee for the garage and then a tram ride up the hill. Next time you're traveling through LaLa land, check it out. Spectacular!

Coast Walk

After consuming some pretty fab ice cream and touring the lovely Stansbury House (see blog entry below), my friends Fran, John and I received a bonus (sometimes it pays to be latecomers!) and enjoyed chatting with a few of the volunteers on the back porch. (What a GREAT ice cream social those volunteers put on every year!) Thanks to Ron (an avid fellow outdoorsperson), we learned about "COASTWALK," an organization which sponsors hikes along the California coast. As their web site boasts: "Twice the fun of the average camping trip...and half the work!" Throw in the "gourmet" food and camaraderie, and it sounds like my kind of adventure! So often I think about how fortunate I am to live in Northern California, with its diverse and astounding beauty.

Ice Cream at Stansbury House!

How long has it been (if EVER) since you visited the gorgeous, historical Stansbury House? It's only been around since 1883! (at the corner of W. 5th St. and Salem) This Friday (Aug. 21st) would be a great time to check it out, during the annual ice cream social (6 to 9 p.m.), another great Chico tradition.

Now the property of The City of Chico and maintained by the Stansbury Home Preservation Association, this wonderful example of Italian-Victorian architecture was originally built (out of sugar-pine lumber) for Dr. Oscar Stansbury and his wife, Libbie. It remained in the Stansbury family for more than three generations.

If you can't make the Ice Cream Social this Friday, tours are regularly held Saturday and Sunday, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Cost is just $2 for adults, $1 for students, and free for children under 10. A real must-see!

Gateway Science Museum

Perhaps you've seen the interesting new building going up on The Esplanade just north of Bidwell Mansion here in Chico these past few months. That would be the new "Gateway Science Museum" being constructed. According to the museum web site, the facility "will be a state-of-the-art natural history museum celebrating the region's natural beauty and resources. Permanent and traveling exhibits, as well as education programs for Northern California's schoolchildren, will further the museum's mission." I don't know about you, but early tomorrow morning I'm heading out (with my mom--it's an annual tradition) to the Chico State Farm to picket a few buckets full of fresh, sweet, juicy, delectable PEACHES! $1 per pound; cash or check only. There are several varieties and plenty of low-hanging fruit, but ladders are also provided for those just-out-of-reach beauties. May not have time to make peach jam like last year (besides, there are still a couple of jars in the freezer), but I can hardly wait to get my fill of fresh ones!

Pond Tour

Last weekend I had the pleasure of visiting several "water garden" sites with long-time bud Merryl. The 15th annual Pond Tour offered 6 sites this year, three of which I was able to get to. (Begun in 1995 by the Congregational Church of Chico, the proceeds benefit such local projects as The Chico Boys & Girls Club and the Butte College Horticultural Scholarship fund.)

At Friendly Farm Alpacas we had the extra treat of hobnobbing with a throng of furry four-legged critters. I couldn't resist coming away with a bag of unbelievably soft stuff to spin up at home. Seems like a very well-run operation with happy mammals (including the very friendly owner, Kathleen Friend!).

The back yard pond at Lucy Way (in north Chico) is a good example of what can be accomplished in a small area. Local pond builder Jeremy Wilson of Ponds and Patios created this delightful koi pond "serenity garden" for lucky homeowner Kathleen Merrill.

The Goddess Temple on Autumn Lane (near Forest Ranch) was intriguing, to say the least. "Meditation paths" meander around several ponds and waterfalls. The temple is a large, open-air space featuring several large sculptures. The roof of the structure boasts a vegetable garden and yoga area. Several smaller buildings on the property act as sites for processes such as acupuncture and "sound healing." Solar and wind power are used exclusively at this interesting retreat.

Maxfield Parrish at Crocker Museum

I had the great good fortune to see over 80 original Maxfield Parrish works at the Reno Museum of Art a few years back. Just found out the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento has a Parrish show going on through July 19th. Click here to view prints of some of his wonderful works. If you have a chance to check out the exhibit (and the beautiful Crocker Museum if you haven't been!), I'd highly recommend it.

The Green Gate

Wow! What a great hike we had this morning! Discovering some of the great trails around Chico is becoming a pre-4th-of-July-family-reunion tradition. This year we decided to do the Upper Bidwell Park "Green Gate" hike, which begins off Hwy 32 about half way to Forest Ranch. The good news: it's mostly downhill and shady during early morning hours (we started at 6:30 a.m.). The bad news: POISON OAK! Gobs of it. Watch for it on both sides of the trail, ranging from dark green to vibrant red. (Stay tuned for the itch update...hopefully we all avoided contact.)

The views were gorgeous, and the total time was 3 1/2 hours, with several rest breaks. The trail ends in a level trail along a rock wall overlooking the creek, exiting next to the Falcon's Point gated community on Chico Canyon Rd.

This is truly one of the nicest hikes I've taken. Just watch out for that treacherous 3-leafed devil plant!

Chico Performances

The new schedule for Chico Performances is out, and it's looking good, as usual! A highlight of this year's lineup at CSUC is BB King (see photo at left) on November 17th. You may wonder what the "BB" stands for. According to the Wikipedia posting, Riley B. King (STILL doesn't say what THAT "B" stands for!) was born 9/16/25 in Itta Bena, Mississippi. In 1946 he worked at the R&B radio station WDIA under the nickname "Beale Street Blues Boy," which became simply "BB." So now you know.

I had the pleasure of seeing BB King last time he performed at CSUC's Laxson Auditorium, and it was memorable! What a great performer. This show is likely to sell out, so try to get your tickets early on.

Early "Series Ticket" purchasing begins Wed., July 1st. Just buy a ticket to 6 or more shows, and you'll get a 10% discount (some exceptions) and GREAT seats. There's always a line the first day these tickets go on sale, and my wonderful sis-in-law Jamie usually volunteers to take our orders and get tickets (THANKS Jamie!). Single tickets go on sale Mon. Aug. 23rd.

Other notable 2009-10 Chico Performances include physician/spiritual leader Deepak Chopra, trumpet master Wynton Marsalis, country music legend Merle Haggard, "Prairie Home Companion's" wordsmith/storyteller Garrison Keillor, controversial comedian Paula Poundstone, Vienna Boys Choir (dating back to 1498, but surely not the same boys), and world-class guitarist, Australian Tommy Emmanuel (a Chico- and personal-favorite of mine).

So get your tickets, mark your calendars, and plan to hit downtown Chico early to have dinner at one of the great little eateries before the show!

Don't miss the PATRICK RANCH COUNTRY FAIRE AND THRESHING BEE this weekend, Sat. & Sun., June 13 & 14 happening at (naturally) the Patrick Ranch, located at 10381 Midway, between Chico and Durham. In addition to the Threshing Bee, there will be an Artisan Faire, food courts, live music, childrens activities, pony rides, "working dog" exhibits and lots, lots more. Admission is FREE to children 12 and under, and adults are just $5! I'll be out there volunteering in one of the booths from noon to 2:30 on Sat. Hope to see you there!

Note: This is a great opportunity to check out one of the most historic homes in the Chico Area. The Patrick Ranch was bequeathed to the Chico Museum Association (now the Far West Heritage Association) by Hester Patrick in 2001. Hester was a charter member of our local Soroptimist International of Chico club and a fascinating and accomplished woman--a real "maverick" for her time. Feather Falls Hike

Bro John and I recently did the 7 mile round trip hike to the beautiful Feather Falls in Oroville (Plumas National Forest), reportedly the 6th or 7th tallest falls in the country. (Click here for a few photos taken during our hike, and here for a 14 second video.) I hadn't done this particular hike in about 20 years. It was even more beautiful (and pretty much just as strenuous) as I remembered. The weather was PERFECT, and there were happy hikers of all ages enjoying the day. Like most others, we saved our lunch to enjoy on the lookout deck, enjoying the view of the fabulous waterfall, complete with rainbow toward the bottom. Something unexpected was the proliferation of wildflowers--so many different types and colors; they were gorgeous! And something I definitely did NOT miss were the swarms of ladybugs we encountered on our last visit. (Did you know ladybugs sometimes bite?)

There is a path that leads to the top of the falls, which I understand is also lovely. I'll have to save THAT view for another trip--maybe after I've increased my hiking endurance. Hey--I hear the recently-rediscovered Whiskeytown Falls (near Redding, CA) is just a 3.4 mile round-trip hike. And you can check out the amazing Sundial Bridge while you're in the area!

Jenny and Pete's Wedding!

My lovely niece Jenny (John and Jamie's daughter) married the dashing and adventurous Pete last Friday at her Aunt Kelly and Uncle Doug's home in Forest Ranch! (Click here to view my Shutterfly album of the wedding.) The reception was held at the Spiritual Enrichment Center, California Park, in Chico. It was a four-day event of food, drink, merry-making, tears, and lots and lots of smiles and laughter.

Pete and Jenny will continue to reside in Utah, where they are nearly done rehabbing their home while Jenny works on her advanced education and her cougar research. Here's to your new life together, Pete and Jenny!

As great as our little college town of Chico is, its proximity to the mountains, the coast, and the "city" makes it easy to do a day or weekend trip. San Francisco is just 3 hours away, and Sacramento just 1 1/2 hours.

On a recent trip to Sacramento I strolled around the State Capitol area and took a few photos (click here and then on View Album to see the photos on a Shutterfly album). So many cool shops and restaurants! Had great sushi at Momiji (14th & G St.). This past year friends and I got season tickets to the "Broadway" series at the Sacramento Community Theater (1301 L St.). The offering included "The Color Purple," "Avenue Q," "Frost-Nixon," and "Lion King." I have to say, I was very impressed with these traveling shows! The upcoming season (Sept. 30, 2009 - May 30, 2010) includes Legally Blonde, Spring Awakening, Xanadu. Little House on the Prairie, and A Chorus Line.

I definitely attend and appreciate local Chico theater, including entertainment at CSUC as well as The Blue Room, Chico Cabaret and Chico Community Theater. But it's also fun to get out of town once in a while and enjoy the diversity Northern California has to offer!

Once again our little Chicotown makes the grade when it comes to citywide eco-consciousness. Cars.com just came out with its 2009 ranking of "cities most interested in hybrid vehicles." Not surprisingly, three of the top ten cities were in Oregon (Portland and Eugene--another cool college town--being #1 and 2, Medford/Klamath Falls being #7). Also not surprisingly, 4 of the ten cities were in California, Chico being #8. (Click here to view the article and complete list.)

Bacteria Be Gone!

My back yard strawberry plants have matured enough to produce a decent crop (enough right now for a nice fresh-fruit-and-yogurt breakfast every morning!) Such a treat. I do believe my homegrown compost is responsible for such large, lush berries.

How to effectively clean these little beauties (as well as any produce grown or purchased)? I recently came across a study done comparing 1) rinsing with water, 2) using one of those "veggie washes" you can buy and 3) simply using 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water in a spray bottle. (Click here to read the article or here to listen to the NPR report.) Turns out the vinegar solution (followed by a water rinse) removes 98% of bacteria on smooth-skinned produce. (You can soak more textured fruit and veggies.) I now keep a spray bottle filled with vinegar solution under the sink--super easy!

I also used a vinegar/salt/lemon combo recently to clean the tarnish off a brass tray my Mom wanted to display. Combined with a little elbow grease, worked like a charm. That vinegar is amazing stuff...click here for more uses (like removing those pesky stickers from stuff you buy!)

Bike to Work Week

I'm proud to say our office, W. M. Campbell Real Estate, participated in "Bike to Work Week" by riding our bicyles to the office today. (BTW, we all DID wear helmets!) Couldn't have picked a more beautiful day to do it, either! Distances varied from 1/2 mile to nearly 10 miles round trip (with my bike commute in the mid-range at 5 miles). I sometimes ride my EVT electric scooter, which is a "bit" easier than hopping on the bike if I have to run out and show a house!

Sightless Skiing

You may have read my previous blog posting about Erik Weihenmayer, the blind mountain climber, whose thrilling presentation I was able to attend a few years back (click here to view that posting). Well apparently his thrillseeking adventures are not limited to scaling the highest peaks. With the assistance of an expert guide, Jeff Ulrich, Erik also snow skis, among other adventurous activities! (Click here to view a 2 min. video of Erik and his guide in action--it's amazing!)

Erik's web site states, "Erik Weihenmayer is the only blind person to have climbed the "Seven Summits," the tallest peak on every continent. He has scaled the 3000 foot rock face of El Capitan, skied down the tallest peak in Europe, and guided Tibetan blind teenagers to 21,500 feet on the north side of Mt. Everest."

Next time I'm battling it out behind closed eyelids about whether to drag my protesting body out of bed for some morning exercise, I'm going to think about Erik and his "blind to failure" attitude. This is one inspiring guy!

CSUC Organic Veggie Project

Mission Statement for the Chico State Organic Vegetable Project: A self-sustaining education, research, and production facility for organic vegetables to support school, university, and community agriculture education, provide research information for local growers, and provide produce for the CSUC campus food services.

I hadn't heard about this project until a friend posted a link on Facebook (see how educational FB can be?). My family and I have always been fans of the U-pick peach orchard at the Chico State farm on Hegan Lane. And I have actually attended the compost workshop at Chico State (and y'all know what an advocate I am of composting--my plants & trees have NEVER looked better or been happier, with all those scraps going to nourish them rather than going to the landfill!). So I was happy to learn that CSUC students are getting this hands-on experience, learning how to grow organic veggies, providing staff and students with healthy alternatives to fast food. (Here's to the Slow Food Movement!)

Three Cups of Tea

Mountain-climbing adventurer/author/school builder/humanitarian Greg Mortenson recently visited Chico to discuss his work in fostering world peace. (Click here for a clip of Greg chatting with reporters during his visit.) His fascinating book, Three Cups of Tea, chronicles the path that lead him from his failed attempt to summit K2 in 1993 to building over 73 schools in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan. After reading his book in my book club, we had one of the best discussions in our 10-year history, supplemented by photos one of our members had taken over 20 years ago when she traveled in that region. (His book was also chosen as the "book in common" in both Chico and Sacramento.) The kids at Rose Scott Learning Community (for ADHD and austistic kids) are busy collecting coins for Pennies for Peace, one of the fundraising projects started by Greg. Earth Day

Happy Earth Day, Mother Earth! I'm sure anyone driving (or better yet, walking or biking) down the Esplanade here in Chico has noticed the "Earth Day" flags these past few weeks. The Earth Day flag was designed in 1970 by Earth Day founder John McConnell, inspired by the first photos taken during America's Apollo 10 space missions in 1969.

The "Earth Flags of Chico" project was passed unanimously by the City Council in March of 2007 in support of "green initiatives and ecological responsibility." I think they are a good reminder to us all to do whatever we can to take care of this amazing planet we call home.

Chico Cozy

"Chico Cozy" vs. "ChicoLaura Cozy"!

Popping into a local java shop the other day before hitting the road, I noticed a display on the counter featuring a new local product: The "Chico Cozy." It's an "eco-friendly alternative to the cardboard sleeve." Another clever, innovative idea by a fellow Chicoan! The Chico Cozy web site says their product is "named for the town in which it is made...A vibrant city with small-town appeal, Chico possesses a great sense of community and an appreciation for the environment."

So what do you think about my "ChicoLaura Cozy"? It's a little something I knitted up with leftover yarn a year or so ago after my daughter-in-law, Eva, made several (much nicer than mine) versions from a pattern she found.

Chico Kite Day

The incredibly powerful, gusty wind last Sunday couldn't keep kite enthusiasts away from Chico Kite Day in Martin Luther King Park (also known as "20th Street Park" or simply "Community Park" to locals).

I just happened to have my trusty Flip Video with me and shot this fun little short film of the festivities. (click here to view)

On a recent jaunt to upper park, I happened to notice a few large, beautiful kites being flown at Wildwood Park. My son Gabe and I struck up a conversation with the flyer of a huge, gorgeous red beauty. Turns out he is the owner of a local biz, Gone with the Wind Kites. We visited his place of biz. In addition to getting my "vintage" kite repaired, we purchased a few new ones. While I didn't launch mine on the official Kite Day, I've marked my calendar for the first Sunday of each month, when the "kite people" commune in Wildwood Park to fly their colorful dragons, frogs, and parafoils. One Amazing Climber--a MUST READ!

Ever since hearing Erik Weihenmayer speak at a CRS (Certified Residential Specialist) conference about five years ago, I've had a photo of him crossing an icey crevasse on a bowed ladder high up on Mt. Everest. I keep the photo there to remind me that, no matter how challenging life may be, we can accomplish nearly anything we put our minds to if we maintain a positive attitude, work hard, and support each other in our dreams and goals.

As if climbing Mt. Everest wasn't enough of a challenge, Erik's story is all the more powerful because he has been blind since the age of 13! That climb was funded by the National Federation of the Blind with the hope that Erik would inspire today's visually impaired as Helen Keller did during her lifetime.

I recently came across an article about Erik's successful summit on February 12th of Colorado's Bridal Veil Falls, an epic 365-foot ice climb that "ranks among the most classic lines in North America," according to the National Geographic article (CLICK HERE to read the article). Eric was joined on that climb by Iraq war veteran Chad Jukes, who lost his right leg to an explosive device in 2007.

Thinking back to Erik's presentation Eva (daughter-in-law) and I attended five years ago (you could have heard a pin drop in that room of 1,000+ people!), I feel the same sense of amazement and inspiration now, reading about his recent accomplishments. In these difficult times, isn't it awe-inspiring to know that there are people like him to show us how courage and commitment can overcome just about any adversity we may face?

Home, Garden & Antique Show!

Sure hope to see you at the Annual Soroptimist of Chico Home, Garden & Antique Show this weekend! (March 21st and 22nd) I took photos at last year's show (click here to view) just to show folks how much fun it is. In addition to lots of items and ideas for the home and garden, there is a huge building devoted to antiques and another building with floral displays.

Lots of fun activities for the kids too! And the best part is that 100% of the gate proceeds support local community service projects. Click here to see a list of some of the good work this great group has done here in Chico (in addition to other parts of the country and world).

S/I Chico started up in 1931 and has been going strong ever since. (Emma Wilson and Hester Patrick were early members.) Soroptimist International was founded in Oakland, CA, in 1921. Currently there are over 90,000 members in more than 3,000 clubs in 124 countries/territories. Needless to say, this is one thriving organization!

(In which case, check your local shelter or, here in Chico, the Butte Humane Society first, for the pups and kitties most in need of loving homes.) If you decide the puppycam fulfills your needs for now, you can always donate your time or items (blankets, towels, food etc.) to a shelter near you.

Artfull Bras

Members of Quilters of South Carolina have been busy creating pieces for The Artfull Bras exhibit (click here to see more photos of the entries) for Breast Cancer Awareness The exhibit consists of "fifty original works of art which are unique, entertaining, humorous, and beautiful to make the public aware of breast cancer, to memorialize those lost to the disease, and to honor survivors."

The exhibit will tour South Carolina until Oct. '09 (Breast Cancer Awareness Month), at which time the pieces will be be auctioned off, with proceeds going to Best Chance Network, a South Carolina agency that provides cancer screening at no or low cost.

When I started quilting wayyyy back in about 1975, my sister Barb said, "Now Laura, you know that's just for old ladies!" Begging to differ, I informed her that I considered quilting to be an art form. Little did I know how the art of quilting would evolve in the coming years! With amazing pieces being displayed and judged in such places as Paduka, Kentucky and at Pacific International in Santa Clara, CA, quilts have come a long way from the log cabin pattern women pieced together on the prairie! (A personal favorite of mine the first 10 years or so of my quilting career.)

I've been a member of Annie's Star Quilt Guild here in Chico since about 1990. What a great group of quilters! We meet monthly (1st Thurs.) at 6:30 at the Masonic Family Center. We have over 200 members of every age and skill level. In addition to educating members on new techniques, most meetings showcase a nationally-known quilter. Also, the club has made and donated hundreds of quilts of all sizes to such organizations as Catalyst Women's Shelter, Meals on Wheels, Feather River Hospice, and many others. Fruit Salad Anyone?

I was out hanging sheets to dry today on my "solar clothes dryer" (don't you love the smell of line-dried sheets?) when a tiny flash of white caught my eye. Wow! The little bare root "fruit salad" tree planted just a few weeks before (by my handy friend Evan) already had a few blossoms! (Of course, I insisted he shovel a few scoops of my great homegrown compost into the soil, which I'm sure helped nurture this little beauty.)

I had called around to the various nurseries here in Chico to find mine and ended up going to Hodge's Nursery (9681 Midway, Durham), where I received great service and helpful information. (Dangerour places, those nurseries...it's like walking into a Ben & Jerry's after fasting for three days!) But I limited my purchase that day to the fruit salad tree. (The blossoms are popping out on the Santa Rosa plum and Independence nectarine branches; the other two branches are Elberta peach and bleinheim apricot.)

I noticed plenty of bee activity on my nearby rosemary, so let's hope for some fresh-from-the-garden fruit salad this year!

Orion Does it Again!

Three cheers for Chico State journalism students! It seems The Orion (the Chico State newspaper) once again won several top awards at the Associated Collegiate Press national journalism convention last weekend. This is the largest and oldest national membership organization for college student media in the U.S.

According to today's Sacramento Bee article, the Orion was awarded first place for general excellence and overall design in the "Best of Show" for 4-year colleges and universities. Additionally, video editor Rodolfo Vazquez of Woodland won first place for interactive multimedia content for his video on the band Ozomatli.

These awards are generally considered to be the highest national honors in their field, and are unofficially known as the "Pulitzer Prize" of student journalism.

One of my proudest moments in high school came when the principal announced over the loudspeaker that I had won 1st place in a statewide high school newspaper competition for an editorial I had written. So I can imagine the excitement our Chico State students must be feeling. Congrats!!!

Facebook Fun

Are you a fan of Facebook yet? I've been a member of this "online social network" for the past few months and have enjoyed staying in touch this way, especially with friends and family I don't get to see as often as I'd like. It's really pretty easy once you get the hang of it. (I was going to say "Even my mom is on FB," but SHE'S the one who got the rest of us on email when it was new!) If you have a digital camera (and know how to use it), you can post photos of your kids, pets, travels, activities etc. for your friends to enjoy.

Stay in touch with a particular group on FB by creating a page for that group. I've put together the "Burghardt Family Clan" as a way of allowing my family members to easily connect, share photos, videos, information etc. (Still trying to get the fam on board with that one!) I also belong to the Facebook-Live Chico, Northern California CRS Chapter and Soroptimist International of Chico groups, among others. (What is a Soroptimist, you ask? Click here for a clip from an incredible video my friend, fellow Soroptimist member, and Emmy award-winning documentarian Jeanne Rawlings filmed recently!)

FB is fun, it's free, and it's spreading like wildfire (not just for the teeny-boppers any more--how's that word for dating myself?)! Check it out for yourself. Whether you're new to town or a 4th generation Chicoan, you may find the Yelp web site an interesting place to check out reviews of area restaurants and shops. (Or if you are planning a trip out of town, check into venues of your destination.) You'll see real reviews by actual customers. Can you guess to which local restaurant this review refers? "Could this town get any cooler? They even have their own brewery and it rocks! I love that its filled with locals who come after work or for lunch for a burger and some beer...this brewery is classy in a really comfortable kind of way serving some really good food if you know what to order." You guessed it, the world-renowned Sierra Nevada Brewery and Restaurant! (My son Kiel worked in the restaurant for a couple of years, and it was a great place for a young person to be employed.)

Next time you're trying to figure out where to go for some good eats, try Yelping. You may just expand your culinary horizons!

What's this about a first-time buyer tax credit? (Part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a.k.a. the Stimulus Bill.) Well, if you haven't owned a home in the past 3 years, and if you qualify under the income and various other guidelines, you may be eligible for an $8000 tax credit if you purchase a home to use as your primary residence before 12/1/09. Afro-Cuban All Stars

Wow...energy, talent and charisma combined! I just attended an amazing performance by the Afro-Cuban All Stars at Chico State Laxson Auditorium, courtesy of Chico Performances.

The super-cool Juan de Marcos Gonzalez lead the band to stardom in 1998 with A Toda Cuba le Gusta, the first album to be recorded during the now-famous Buena Vista Social Club sessions. (Toward the end of the evening, Gonzalez expressed his hope for continued improved relations between Cuba and the U.S., something he feels is likely with the new U.S. President, "Who I like!")

The 14-member band had people on their feet in no time, with their crazy-good rhythm and hot horn section. Their choreographed moves brought the energy up a notch, as the Shaft-like conga player joined the drummer and percussionists in keeping that Cuban beat humming (including one tune in 7/4 time!) The last conga player I remember seeing in a suit and tie was Ricky Ricardo. (Click here to see "Ricky"--aka Desi Arnaz--at his "Babalu" best!) But all these guys were decked out in spiffy suits, some with classy hats (fedora, beret) to boot. All in all, a great, energetic concert performed by supremely accomplished musicians. Springtime in Chico

Only February, and it's SPRINGTIME in Chico! This corner of Vallombrosa and Mangrove (across from Chipotle) is absolutely my all-time favorite "bloomin' spot" at this time of year. After my mom and I visited the Farmer's Market this morning (wonderful, fresh produce!), we swung over to see whether the blossoms were out. You betcha! Next time you're cruising downtown, swing by and check it out. The blossoms only last a few weeks, so don't miss 'em!

Fair Trade Chico!

On Valentine's Day Chico, CA officially became a "Fair Trade" town! A hard-working group of folks celebrated their accomplishment at the "Hands" near the municipal building. What is Fair Trade? According to one web site, "At its most fundamental level, Fair Trade is the practice of insuring that farmers and workers receive a fair and stable price for their products and labor." (Click here for a more complete definition of "Fair Trade.")

The first fair trade town in the U.S. was Media, PA (25 minutes west of Philadelphia), which acquired the status in 2006. Their web site states, "If buying a Fair Trade chocolate bar here means that somewhere children are going to school instead of working in the fields, we're taking a small step towards a better world with every bite. In a nutshell, that's what it means to be a Fair Trade town!" Sounds good to me. (Click here to view video.)

Local businesses like Bidwell Perk, Grilla Bites, and Chico Natural Foods (click here for complete list) have pledged to put "People before Profits" and have committed to offer at least two fair trade product lines in their businesses. I'd love to see more local businesses follow suit.

In a related topic, I just watched "The Real Dirt on Farmer John" via a Netflix DVD. Pretty interesting documentary about an individual (and rather eccentric) farmer but also about the plight of the farming industry in general over the past few decades. Obviously, this subject should be a concern to anyone who eats!

I Heart my Crockpot!

For "Heart" Day I thought I'd share one of the things I love most in my household (other than BK, Beautiful Kitty, that is; click here for recent photos): my crockpot (aka "slow cooker" to use contemporary jargon). A few years ago I was in Jackson Hole, WY, visiting niece Jenny (THAT adventurous trip is a whole 'nuther story!), browsing through a local bookstore and happened upon a cookbook called NOT Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook. Well, with an intriguing title like that, you just know I had to pick it up. (I didn't even know my mother owned a slow cooker cookbook!) What an enlightening experience! Did you know you can make tapioca or bread pudding in a crockpot? How about apple butter? Yep! Not just for beef stew any more, baby. Never one to run out and buy the latest gadget (besides, didn't want to lug it home on the plane), I waited two whole days until I got home to Chico to run out and buy a cool new "slow cooker." Got one with a timer, so it can be automatically set to turn to "warm" after a pre-set period of time. I've since made all kinds of fun things, the hands-down friends & family favorite being Fresh Raspberry Bread Pudding (p. 437 in "Not Your Mother's"). I've often substituted strawberries or used a combination. Amazing!

Another great book I discovered was the Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker cookbook, with over 200 recipes. Of course, there are also many web sites with good recipes too. The Vegan Heart Doc shares his favorites along with heart health info. Wellsphere is another site with heart-healthy crockpot recipes. With the advent of the "Slow Food" movement (not to mention the slowing economy), there seems to be a resurgence in home cooking, thank goodness! So you might want to dig around in the back of that cupboard and pull out and dust off that avocado-green crockpot from the 70s (I passed my heirloom crockpot on to my son) and try it. Just a little "slow cooked" food for thought!

Hawkeye & Friend

The other morning as I was working on my laptop at home, I found myself gazing out my back window (shades of daydreaming in high school French class!) at the ornamental crane perched on my fence. I wondered whether the rotating wind-powered wings served to keep birds away from the fruit trees and grapevines lining my yard. Not two minutes later, another fluttering motion caught my eye, and I watched as this gorgeous hawk landed a few feet away from the "scary" crane. Guess that answered my question! There's a drainage canal behind my house, and the hawk appeared to be shopping for lunch. (Fortunately the fence blocked THAT view!) The hawk politely maintained his (her?) pose while I scrambled to get my camera and snapped this photo.

Can anyone tell me what kind of hawk this is?

Giving Thanks

I know "Thanksgiving" is officially over, but I ran across this article online today, 10 Reasons to be Thankful, and thought to myself, "What a great time to be reading something positive!" My next thought, of course, was to share it in my blog. It's good to take a few moments in our daily lives (especially these days) to contemplate the many things we really do have to be grateful for. As is quite obvious to anyone who has read my past blog entries, I'm so grateful to be living in a place like Chico. (See "Stepford Chico?") Friends and I were just discussing that at a busy, sunny Chico Farmer's Market last Saturday. I'm also very thankful for the family I was lucky enough to be born into (see lovely photo of Mom and Dad above, taken in '05 at that very same Farmer's Market) and for the great friends and clients I've met in the 26 years I've lived here (as well as longtime friends from earlier times). What are the top three on your list of 10 Reasons?

Klean Kanteen

Another wonderful locally-owned Chico company, Klean Kanteen, is thriving even in this challenging economy. I'm still using several Klean Kanteens I purchased several years ago and recently became a "fan" of the company on Facebook, just because I think it's such a great product--and a healthier, more ecological alternative to the Personal Hydration Plastic Bottle Syndrome. (Did you know 8 out of 10 of those bottles end up in the landfill, even though they are recyclable?)

My dear friend Robin emailed to say she had just been thinking about looking for just such a thing when she saw the link on my Facebook page. So I dutifully pulled up the Klean Kanteen web site to email to her and noticed they have now branched out to meet the needs of BOTH ends of the generational spectrum, with the new 12 oz. "Sippy" as well as wine carafes for the 21+ crowd. All now offered in a rainbow of colors. (P.S. They make great gifts!)

Snow Goose Festival

Well the wonderful 10th annual SNOW GOOSE FESTIVAL is nearly upon us, with field trips, speakers, workshops, exhibits and the increasingly-popular "Gathering of Wings" banquet with both silent and live auctions and raffle. The featured speaker is Ed Harper, photographer, expert birder, and world traveler. This festival is just one of the things that makes living in Butte County so great.

It takes a lot of folks to put on a major event like this. Check out the list of sponsors who have donated time and/or funds to make this outstanding event happen.

During past festivals I've gone on field trips to the Sutter Buttes (which, as you may know, is an "by invitation only" place, so this is a rare opportunity) and the Black Butte Lake area and have attended many lectures and slideshows. It's a great event attended by folks from all over the planet. Check out the schedule and sign up for a field trip or workshop!

New School Offers Hope

This evening I attended a fundraising dinner for the newly-opened Rose Scott K-12 Learning Community, a school for students with ADHD and autism. Founder and Director/Lead Teacher Cindy Carlson was on hand to talk about the school and the role it plays in helping children who don't "fit the mold." According to their brochure, the school emphasizes the arts, music (which the kids LOVE), science, social studies, math, language, physical exercise, peace studies, compassionate communication, service learning, sustainability and preparedness for life success. Sounds like a curriculum to which ALL of our schools should aspire! I truly admire Cindy and her staff of volunteers for dedicating themselves to offering hope to children (and their parents) who may find the "regular" classroom setting a frustrating, esteem-sapping place.

Polar Bear Swim

If you missed it this year, mark your calendar for next year's Annual New Year's Day Polar Bear Swim at One Mile in Bidwell Park. It's a blast! I took along my handy little Flip Videocam this year; CLICK HERE to check out the fun video (complete with pre- and post-swim interviews of the brave swimmers!). In the 26 years I've lived in Chico, I can honestly say I've never once been tempted to take the plunge. But it sure is fun to watch (as evidenced by the throngs of cheering, towel-bearing fans waiting on the other side of the pool). Hmmmm... maybe 2010? Which reminds me, do you think we'll be saying "Two Thousand Ten" or shorten it to the simpler "Twenty-Ten"?

Down Under

The gnome and I (along with Mom, sis Nancy and her husband Jim from Portland) returned from two weeks "down under" just in time to spend the holidays with the family. (In Nancy & Jim's case, there was an unexpected 3-day visit in Healdsburg with Becky and Steve, as their flight to Portland was canceled due to snow!)

While it wasn't nearly as warm as we had expected (after packing all those summer clothes), it was beautiful and a great trip overall. We mostly visited the port cities as we cruised from Australia to New Zealand and then all around the north and south islands. What struck me most was the architecture--both old and new. I hadn't expected the lacey ironwork on the old buildings (like what you'd see in New Orleans), nor the vibrant colors and ultra-contemporary designs of many of the newer buildings. We had lunch in the "Sky Tower" in Auckland (looked like Seattle's Space Needle) with a perfect view of not only the city, but the "jumpers" right outside our window. Believe it or not, they actually have a controlled-cable-type jump for $200 NZ--none of us opted for it, but it was fun to watch.

Run for Food

Because I was in Healdsburg enjoying our annual family "Thanksmas" (combination of Thanksgiving and Christmas) celebration at the lovely home of our gracious hosts sister Becky and her handsome hubby Steve (talk about FOOD!), I missed the 3rd annual "Run for Food" event held in Bidwell Park. How proud I was of our generous Chicoans when I read an online article in the Chico E-R about the success of the run! More than 2,600 runners pre-paid the $25 to $30 fee to make the five-kilometer run, and apparently about twice that number ended up participating, resulting in over $65,000 raised to help the Jesus Center in their ongoing efforts to feed those in need. Over the years, my fellow Soroptimist of Chico members and I have taken turns volunteering to serve meals at the Jesus Center, sometimes enlisting the help of our children (which I felt was a very valuable few hours spent with mine), and I have always come away feeling a renewed gratitude for my family, friends, home and the many gifts I enjoy in life. And isn't that what Thanksgiving is all about anyway? Happy holiday season to you and yours!

I'm enthralled by this jazz ensemble and am so proud of Melissa (son Kiel's g/f); she is such a talented and delightful young woman. (So clever of Kiel to hire her to give him singing lessons two years ago!) Here is a 1997 video of Ben Folds performing the same song. There sure are some artistic and accomplished people in this here world.

Delightful Dogs

Speaking of critters, my friend Bejay just shared this very fun video with me (click here to view). Reminds me of our sweet Sarah, the Australian Shepherd who was a cherished family member when my boys were young. If you're yearning for a little canine companionship but aren't in a position to give a home to one, do what my friend Barb does: volunteer to take one from the Butte Humane Society to Obedience School or for a walk in our lovely Bidwell Park or one of the parades held in Chico throughout the year.
